Beer Gadget (This IS cool)

Posted Apr 11th, 2007

Like you need another reason to drink beer. Good beer, of course, comes in bottles (in my case, 22 ounce bottles from Stone Brewery, but everyone has their own favorites, of course). So the question, then, is how can one take that pure moment of rathskellerian quintessence that is the “pffft” of the opening of a bottle of beer, and make it better?

With a gadget, of course.

The coolest bottle opener I have seen pretty much ever is the Be Open Bottle opener from Whynotbe.com. It’s a cylinder just big enough to slip over the top of the beer bottle. You grab the bottle and opener, and push it down firmly, and back up again in a single motion. The cap pops off, and sticks to a magnet on the side of the opener. It’s like a magic trick, so be sure you have witnesses. You’ll want to open several. Easily. Especially if it’s the IPA.

One warning I learned the hard way: If you’re doing this standing up, hold the bottom of the bottle firmly, or do it on a table. Pushing firmly and sharply down on a bottle not supported from the bottom will still open the bottle, but it does this against the floor, which makes the drinking of the beer a little difficult.
